'Dead Cells' coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this year

Rogue-lite "Dead Cells" is set to arrive to consoles later this year. Motion Twin

"Dead Cells," the rogue-lite action platformer by indie developer Motion Twin, will be arriving to consoles later this year, specifically the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms.

The French indie developer released a new trailer announcing these upcoming ports on their official YouTube page. While no details were given regarding any specific release date, they are aiming for a 2018 release.

It should be noted that, at the time of this writing, "Dead Cells" is still an Early Access game on Steam, albeit one that gets updates on a fairly regular basis and, for the most part, feels like a complete game. When asked if the final version of the game would release on PC and console simultaneously, Motion Twin producer Steve Filby told Polygon that they would like to release the PC and console versions at the same time.

Despite the Early Access moniker, which is often seen as a red flag more often than not, "Dead Cells" has managed to gain a lot of positive reception and a lot of popularity. It has sold well over 600,000 copies of the game and currently sits at an "Overwhelmingly Positive" user review score on Steam.

"Dead Cells" is a rogue-lite, metroidvania, action platformer, or at least that is what is written on the game's Steam page. In it, players will traverse a procedurally-generated castle while picking up various tools and equipment to help them combat the forces that lie within. Once a new area has been cleared, players spend Cells to unlock new items to be found in the castle as well as passive abilities for the player.

And in true rogue-lite fashion, once the player dies, the whole world resets with only the unlocked items and abilities carrying over to the next playthrough.

As of now, it is priced at $19.99 on Steam. The developers have not said anything regarding how much the console version will cost but they did tell Polygon that the final price may be a bit more expensive due to extra expenses needed for the console market.
