'Dark Souls 3' DLC release date news: 2 DLC packs in development; tipped to be 'Bloodborne' and 'Demon's Souls' mash-ups

Dark Souls 3 From Software, Bandai Namco

Bandai Namco has revealed that there are at least two planned DLC packs for "Dark Souls 3." The upcoming expansion content may be a mix of other Miyazaki games like "Bloodborne" and "Demon's Souls."

Publisher Bandai Namco has revealed to VideoGamer that the current installment in their popular series, "Dark Souls 3," will be receiving at least expansion content, with the first DLC to drop in the autumn. The second planned DLC will be released in early 2017.

While the publisher has yet to establish the details of the expansion content, having post-launch released for "Dark Souls 3" is already expected given that the franchise is a popular one. Released earlier this year, "Dark Souls 3" has already shipped three million copies since its rollout last March. This is an impressive figure even by Bandai Namco standards that the publisher has confirmed that the game has set new standards in sales, as well as setting a new franchise record.

Meanwhile, developer From Software promises newer, and more expansive line-up of weapons, enemies, and locations for "Dark Souls 3," when the new expansion content drops. Reportedly, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has hinted that one of the improved features for the DLC packs may be a vertical map design, based on popular fan feedback. In addition, the new content will also harken back to the days of previous "Dark Souls" titles, and may even incorporate some of Miyazaki's related works like "Bloodborne" and "Demon's Souls."

Whatever the new content may take in form, Miyazaki hopes that players will still associate post-launch content with the spirit of the entire series.

The game director tells Gamespot, "I think it would be great if something from the Dark Souls series stays with the players as an experience which holds meaning and value to them. What stays with the player forms their opinion on what the Dark Souls series was about, and that's something I appreciate, regardless of what players think of the series."
