Couple finds $2k in Burger King bag but returns it because 'Jehovah sees everything'

A New Hampshire couple returned over $2,000 that they weren't supposed to receive on Friday after reflecting on what they believed God would want them to do.

Janelle Jones and her husband, Matthew, said they could have used the money, but felt that keeping it would be against their faith.

Janelle reported that she pulled into a Burger King drive-thru at 250 N. Main St. in Rochester at around 4:30pm, and ordered a junior spicy chicken sandwich and a sweet tea. When she pulled away, she discovered that her bag contained no food but $2,631 instead.

Shocked, Jones called her husband, who suggested she come home. The couple said two bank deposit envelopes were inside the bag, along with a loose $100 bill.

After briefly considering keeping the windfall, the Joneses, who are Jehovah's Witnesses, decided to return the money.

"We are not perfect human beings," Matthew told Foster's Daily Democrat. "Jehovah sees everything."

Janelle said that the Burger King employees were grateful that the funds were returned.

"One person said 'they were going to get fired' so it felt good knowing we helped them keep their jobs," she reported.

"It felt a lot better than keeping it," Matthew added.

The employees confirmed the Jones' story, but declined comment. There was a reward in return for her good deed, however.

"A manager told me they would give me five free meals," Janelle said. "The manager said he talked to the corporate office and they said to tell me 'thank you.'"
