J.R. Smith's future is still not secure after reports stating that the veteran guard wants more than what Cleveland Cavaliers could offer. This means that more negotiation is needed before truly saying that Smith is in the team.
It was reported that Smith is asking in terms of millions and is way too much for his team, Cleveland. This was shared by Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders on one of his posts, where he said, "Yikes... hearing JR Smith seeking huge deal to return to Cavs, in the $15m per year range. Can Cavs really pass on bringing him back?"
If this proves to be true, the Cavs are in a very tough position. The team is already US$32 million over the salary cap, and they have his Bird rights, so they can re-sign him. However, this means that the team will be knee deep into the luxury tax. The question now is, how deep does owner Dan Gilbert wants to go?
Many fans feel that Smith has proven his worth and deserves what he is asking. Last season, he is one of the best shooter in the team,. He also gave the opposite team a hard time with his defensive play, and it is all worthwhile. Many believed that Cavs will eventually sign him up, however, there is always the threat of another team offering a deal that just is too good to let go. The Cavs doesn't want that to happen, Ecumenical reported.
