Church hosts bunting workshop ahead of the Games

No national celebration in Britain would be complete without those little strings of triangles dangling from lamposts and windows.

Residents in Clapton, north London, were given the chance to learn how to make their own bunting at their local church.

All Souls Church, Clapton Park put on the bunting workshop ahead of the Clapton Park Games, an initiative of the church to get local residents excited about the upcoming London Olympic Games.

The weeklong festival kicks off on the Clapton Park Estate in Hackney from 30 July to 4 August.

There will be a wide range of activities hosted by local organisations, including a kids clubs, live music, a community fete and a barbecue.

Sporting events on the day include a boxing exhibition staged by the local boxing club, a street dance competition by the local youth club, and a football training session and competition being put on by the Newlon Fusion charity together with the local amateur football club.

A logo competition was run in local primary schools and the winning design has been used on all the promotional material for the Clapton Park Games.

The local games are the brainchild of the Rev Tom Haley of All Souls Church.

He said: “I am so excited that the Olympics are coming to London, and I wanted to find a way to engage people in this amazing event, as an opportunity to bring local residents together.

"I’m pleased to see so many local organisations come on board and help plan the event, and we hope as many people come down as possible and just enjoy the festival and be proud of what our local community has achieved together.”
