Christians campaign for return of homelessness adviser sacked over God advice

|PIC1|A campaign has been launched by the Christian Legal Centre seeking justice for a Christian homelessness prevention officer sacked by a London council for suggesting that a client put her faith in God.

The Justice for Duke campaign will see advertisements run on London buses calling on Wandsworth Borough Council to reinstate Duke Amachree, who worked for the council for 18 years prior to being sacked earlier in the year.

Mr Amachree was dismissed after a meeting with a client who had been diagnosed with an incurable illness. He told the client that sometimes doctors do not know everything and encouraged her to consider putting her faith in God. A letter was handed to Mr Amachree two days later informing him he had been suspended.

“Is this really the Britain we live in? Whether we have faith or not, to the mind of every reasonable person I speak to, this treatment is astonishing,” said Andrea Minichiello Williams, CLC director.

Christians will come together to show their support for the father of three in a day of prayer and candlelight vigil outside Wandsworth Town Hall at the same time as his internal appeal hearing takes place on December 15.

A campaign website and blog have been launched to keep supporters informed of developments.

“We hope this will be a rallying point of support for a good man terribly treated in a Britain nobody visiting our time from the 1950s would recognise or want to believe was real,” said Ms Minichiello Williams.

“I hope this campaign will not only win Duke back his job in time for Christmas but also send a signal that the majority of people in Britain, whatever their beliefs, can see this for what it is and demand a return to a proportionate, common sense approach to religious faith in our society. Indeed, this I believe would make an excellent Christmas present for us all.”
