Christian artist Matt Redman likens worship music to human nutrition

Matt Redman says there is a certain responsibility when writing worship music because people need to be able to relate to it and understand it.

Christian artist Matt Redman believes that people respond better to worship music when it is relevant, understandable, and accessible, and that is what he tried to do with his music in his new album "Unbroken Praise."

During an interview with Breathe Cast, the singer compared worship songs to nutrition, like a complex carbohydrate. "I think grass is one, where for humans to eat it, there's nutrition in that, but we don't have the right enzymes to break it down. But then a cow comes, and it does," he said. "I think we have to be careful to not make songs that are like the complex carbohydrate where all these Christians know what we're talking about. They can break this down, but anyone who's not a Christian is like, 'What the heck is that? I don't understand any of that.'"

Redman said this is an important approach to music and worship. When people try to talk about the story of Jesus and the cross, they have to break it down perfectly and explain it in a way that is understandable so that people will really know what happened in the past.

The singer said he feels invigorated every time he writes new songs, and he goes into a process wherein He talks to God or Jesus through his music. Redman feels a sense of responsibility when writing worship songs, since it has the power to go around the world and change people's lives.

"There's something about worship where you can become the ultimate reality check. You can have all these realities you like, maybe it's your bank balance, maybe it's your relationship status...they are all very real. There's a reality that can top all of those and overwhelm all of those...that's the reality that God is on his throne, and He never takes his eyes off of you, He's never gonna leave you. That's what worship does. Worship can be very penetrating," he said.
