'Call of Duty' 2016 release date update: Infinity Ward set to forego 'Ghosts' sequel?

Activision has confirmed that there will be a new installment in the "Call of Duty" franchise, this time from developer Infinity Ward. However, the publisher did not provide any other details. This led fans to speculate on what the publisher and developer have in store for the upcoming new game.

According to rumors, since the current-gen "Call of Duty" title, "Black Ops 3," is a continuation game, Infinity Ward might also come out with a continuation title for their own series in "Call of Duty."

Charlie Intel mentioned that this may well be the case, seeing as the last game that Infinity Ward did for Activision is "Call of Duty: Ghosts." The title was released in 2013, and of all the series titles under the "Call of Duty" franchise, Infinity Ward's last project is still waiting for a sequel. The other series that Infinity Ward did under the "Call of Duty" franchise, "Modern Warfare," already has at least three story installments already released.

However, CoDWatch says that "Ghosts 2" is out of the question, seeing as the original title never really took off when compared against other games in "Call of Duty." According to the industry observer, it is more likely that Infinity Ward will be adding a new sequel in the "Modern Warfare" story since the series is one of the most popular in the franchise. This is if the developer will not choose to make another series from the ground up.

It is also possible that Infinity Ward will aim to release a new title entirely, seeing as Activision tagged the upcoming "Call of Duty" game as an "innovative" one. The industry follower also mentioned that the upcoming new "Call of Duty" game is the start of another three-year cycle in between the developers. Since Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch already released a number of sequels under their series games, it is more likely that Infinity Ward is thinking of refreshing the franchise with a new series.
