Andre Ward is set to move up to the 175-pound level but retired and undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. believes that it should not be the case.
Mayweather believes that the move could be a ploy to see the former World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight champion beaten, part of something he claims that racism exists in boxing.
Ward was forced to surrender his WBA super middleweight belt back in November as he moves up to 175 from his usual 168-pound weight class. Personally, Mayweather believes that it is a bad idea and if Ward had a choice, he may want to reconsider.
Mayweather is so confident that Ward can still be a force at 168 that it may bode him well to pursue a possible fight with Kazakh knockout artist Gennady "Triple G" Golovkin.
Golovkin is, of course, the boxer on the rise and many are anxiously awaiting his much awaited mega bout against Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez by perhaps the fall of 2016.
Golovkin has been steamrolling through his opponents, but Mayweather believes that the momentum could stop somewhere if Ward fights him.
"Do I think that Triple-G can beat Andre Ward? Absolutely not! Easy pickings! It's going to be very, very, very easy for Andre Ward," says Mayweather via Fighthype.com
Right now, it doesn't seem feasible with Ward seemingly set to fight at the Oracle Arena on March 26 where he could probably face Cuban boxer Sullivan Barrera if both sides finally come to terms.
Aside from Barrera, the main target is seen as Sergey Kovalev. Kovalev is the International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Association (WBA), and World Boxing Organization (WBO) light heavyweight champion, who, based on Mayweather's tone, is a death sentence of sorts.
Ward can, of course, put all those in doubt to rest; but fighting at a heavier weight could get some getting used to. So before setting his eyes on Kovalev, that possible fight with Barrera could be a yardstick.
