'Battlefield 5' release date PS4, XBox One news: Franchise starts over as 'Battlefield 1'

The next installment to "Battlefield 4" is apparently, "Battlefield 1." EA DICE

Fans have been expecting that developer DICE will be following up their first-person shooter franchise with "Battlefield 5," after the success of "Battlefield 4." However, the developer surprised fans with a new development, as it is revealed that the new upcoming series installment will be titled "Battlefield 1."

The official reveal video from the developers focused on how the new game fills in for the series. Apparently, the series starts over from the new game, since "Battlefield 1" covers events in an alternate history of World War I. However, the game itself is still deeply rooted in world history. Speaking to VentureBeat, lead designer Daniel Berlin said, "There's no alternate mix of anything else. All the stuff you see is equipment that was available. All the vehicles you see were available at this time."

According to ArsTechnica, the premise for the series continuation actually clicks. The first "Battlefield One" in the franchise is "Battlefield 1942." In addition, the industry follower mentions that naming conventions nowadays do not follow sequences.

Meanwhile, the reveal video itself, while not announcing full details on the game, has been praised by observers. Indeed, one of the earliest accolades that the video got was from an unlikely follower – Infinity Ward. The studio has also only recently revealed its newest game, "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," which is considered to be the direct competitor for the "Battlefield 1" game. The studio said, "It's a great reveal trailer. Kudos to the DICE team."

In addition, Infinity Ward's director of communications Eric Monacelli tweeted, "Congrats to the @EA_DICE team on the reveal. Great song choice, looks superb with interesting mechanics teased. #BattlefieldWorldPremiere."

While Infinity Ward was the first one to reveal their upcoming game, "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare" will be released much later in the year, scheduled to appear on Nov. 4. "Battlefield 1," on the other hand, is confirmed for Oct. 21.
