Apple fans may be disappointed to hear the news about the Apple Mac Mini 2014. It turns out, this new Apple product isn't upgradeable.
For years now, Apple has been a tech genius and giant, which helped propel them to becoming one of the best makers of modern gadgets and devices today. But if there's one thing that not many people like about their products is the lack of upgrade capability, which is something Apple has intentionally designed into their products.
The iPhone, iPad, iPod and MacBooks are devices that can't be upgraded. What a consumer buys is what they get. For example, if one purchases a 16 GB iPhone, that 16 GB is everything there is. People have been hoping that the Mac Mini would be different, but their hopes came crashing down when Apple made the announcement last week.
According to Geek.com, Apple soldered the RAM into the Apple Mac Mini's hardware. Clearly, this means that the RAM cannot be removed, thus, cannot be upgraded. But just like the usual, Apple offers RAM options for consumers. In other words, consumers are again stuck with Apple prices.
Apple has been making good profit by keeping things this way. Consumers have no choice but to cave in and buy the higher RAM options available. Since there's no difference in size between the old Mac Mini and the new one, the reason could very well be making people buy the Mac Mini to upgrade their RAM. Therefore, Apple wins again.
Right now, the upgrade for 8 GB is priced at $100 and the 16 GB is priced at $300. Comparing it with having the freedom to use a RAM stick, an 8 GB stick only costs $75, while the 16 GB option costs $150.
Nevertheless, Apple did lower the price for the Mac Mini, so consumers can now buy the device below $500. Upgrading the RAM is cheaper on this device, too, plus there are two Thunderbolt ports available.
