The Moto Z is already being updated to Android Nougat 7.0. One of the new features for the new platform is support for Daydream VR. Motorola Blog

Previously, it was reported that Motorola has rolled out the new Android Nougat platform, but only for Verizon-exclusive Moto Z Droid series. Good news, though, have floated recently, as the tech maker made the rollout official.

This means that the global, unlocked versions of the Moto Z and Moto Z Force will also start to receive the Android Nougat 7.0 update. According to the official announcement, the platform update will begin rolling out this week. The post also confirmed that as with previous global updates, the Android Nougat 7.0 rollout for the Moto Z and Moto Z Force will be on a staggered schedule. Start dates for the update will vary depending on the carrier and region.

In addition to confirming the start of the Android Nougat 7.0 update schedule, the Motorola announcement also touched on some of the new features that the new platform will bring. The tech maker highlighted one of the signature features of Android N, which is unlocking virtual reality support for flagships. According to Motorola, the Android Nougat 7.0 update will make the Moto Z and Moto Z Force compatible with Daydream VR, Google's virtual reality platform. However, the post also revealed that having Android Nougat 7.0 is only one part of VR compatibility, as Moto flagship owners will still need VR system headsets like the Daydream View.

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force are the latest to receive the new Android Nougat 7.0 platform. With the update already rolling out, it is expected that Motorola will next schedule an update for other recent Moto releases like the Moto G4 series and the new Moto E. It is expected that other Moto handsets starting with 2015 releases will get the Android Nougat update starting early next year.

Meanwhile, aside from the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, most big-name flagships have yet to receive a full version update for the new Android platform. While other tech makers like Samsung and Sony Mobile have already started their own update, it should be noted that it is only for the beta version of the new platform.
