Android Marshmallow update: AT&T releases update to Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge

 Android Developers Blog

While Google is readying a new Android version for release later this year, tech manufacturers and mobile carriers continue to update their lineups to the current-gen Android Marshmallow platform. The latest to roll out an update is AT&T, with the carrier's Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.

In the support articles posted by the U.S. carrier for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, AT&T highlighted that aside from the new features and improvements included in the Android 6.0 Marshmallow version, the new update also unlocks carrier-specific options such as AT&T video call on both devices. Owners of both devices should be receiving an OTA update for the major version change. Meanwhile, those who have yet to receive the notification may check manually if the update is already available for their devices. As with previous updates, a manual refresh of the Software Update option in the Settings and About Device tabs will check if Android Marshmallow is already available to install. If it is, the download will start automatically.

To check if the update is successful, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 owners in AT&T subscriptions should check the system information found on the Settings tab. Tapping the About Device tab should open the device information window, with the Android version already reflecting 6.0.1 and the baseband version will be updated to N920AUCU2BPE6. For the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, the baseband version should reflect G928AUCU2BPE6.

AT&T is the latest operator to continue updating its devices to Android Marshmallow. Usually, mobile carriers are the last to update their flagships to the latest Android platform version, since they only use the stock ROM released by Google as a base version, layering the OS with their own interface. This usually creates a bottleneck in terms of Android updates. For Android Marshmallow, it is revealed that only around 10 percent of capable units are currently updated to the platform, with the remaining 90% still waiting for their updates.
