While Google seems to be readying a new platform by mid-2016, some devices have yet to update to the current-gen Android Marshmallow version. The latest one to release an update for the platform is Samsung, rolling out Android M to its Galaxy Tab S2.
According to SamMobile, the South Korea-based tech manufacturer is now rolling out the Android Marshmallow update to its 2016 top-tier tablet, starting with the Galaxy Tab S2 model SM-T815 in Germany. This model is the 9.7-inch dimension version, with 4G and LTE connectivity. Updating the device brings its build number to T815XXU2BPD6.
The update is only for the 9.7-inch version, as Samsung has yet to announce an Android Marshmallow update for the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 edition.
The new patch for the unlocked version of the Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 version brings improvements and bug fixes, as well as a number of new features. Considered to be a "latecomer" update, the OTA patch for the tablet already brings the April security patch from Google, so new features like the multi-user mode in Android M will already be unlocked when the update is finished.
The multi-user mode in Android Marshmallow allows device owners to create multiple accounts, even differentiate between work and personal profiles. Users can also customize apps and files for these different accounts, so sensitive data will not be exposed.
Aside from the new multi-user mode, the Android Marshmallow brings stock Google improvements like tweaked apps permissions; new APIs for improved user interface, customizable lock screen and home shortcuts, and quick setting toggles for the Samsung Galaxy slate.
The Galaxy Tab S2 is the latest device that Samsung updated to Android Marshmallow. Prior to the release, the tech manufacturer has also worked with different mobile carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile to finally bring the latest Android firmware to carrier-locked Samsung flagships.
