3 tips to making wise, God-glorifying decisions

Are you having problems making wise decisions? If you are, then the Bible has some encouraging instructions and reminders for you.

Here are some tips to help you make wise decisions that will glorify God.

1. Ask God for wisdom

Before making any decision, we need to have wisdom, and the source of wisdom is God Himself. James 1:5 instructs us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

We should, then, ask God for wisdom before making any decisions.

The way we ask God is pretty simple, and His response comes in a simple way, too. We pray to Him, and then seek His Word for instruction and insight. It would also help to ask godly counsel from godly people, such as pastors and church elders.

Remember, however, to ask in faith without doubting, for James 1:6-8 tells us, "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways."

2. Acknowledge God in everything

If you want God to help you make decisions, then you've got to acknowledge Him. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us timeless wisdom in how to get directions from God.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."

If it seems hard for us to understand what the Proverbs passage meant, Paul offers to us another explanation of it in Colossians 3:15-17.

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

3. Do all that you do for God

Proverbs 9:10 tells us, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." When we do all things in reverence to the Lord, we will surely be careful and wise in our choice of actions or decisions.

Paul encourages us with the same thing in Colossians 3:23-24, saying, "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ."
