There are times in our lives when we face troubles that test our faith. These times cause us to fret, to lose heart, and to worry too much. When times like these come, we should remember what God said in Psalm 46:10:
"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
Here are three reasons why we should be still and know that He is God during times of trouble.
1. God is our very present help in times of trouble
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah." (Psalms 46:1-3)
Our very dependable God, our refuge and strength, is always present in every moment, whether it be good or bad. And no matter what happens, He is Sovereign and in control of all things (see Psalm 135:6). Let's choose to put our trust and faith in Him for He is our very present help in times of need.
2. God, who is all-powerful, is with us
"God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah" (Psalms 46:5-7)
God is all-powerful; His voice alone melts the earth. His power is so immense that He merely spoke everything into existence (see Genesis 1). His might is so great; He alone possesses the power to save us and redeem us from all our enemies (see Zephaniah 3:17; Psalm 3; Deuteronomy 20:4). No matter what we are facing, we can take refuge in our Father God, who loves us and is looking out for us.
3. God has been proven time and again to come through
"Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire." (Psalms 46:8-9)
History and all of creation testifies that God has been displaying His might since the beginning of time. These mighty acts of power are reminders of what He can do for us when we trust in Him to save us and help us in times of trouble. No amount of human-made problems or forces of nature can ever come against Him who loved us and gave His Son for us to be saved and reconciled to Him (see John 3:16; Romans 8:32).
