3 reasons why we should not put off for tomorrow what we can do today

There's a saying that goes "do not put off for tomorrow what you can do today." In Bible lingo, we call that habit laziness or procrastination, something that we shouldn't be doing as Christians.

God has given all of us the strength and the necessary skills, as well as the resources, so that we can do things successfully and promptly. Being lazy is just so wrong.

Here are some reasons why we should not be lazy and procrastinate.

1. God considers laziness to be wickedness

You might have shouted "whoa" after reading that, but that is true. In Matthew 25, we read Jesus telling the "parable of three servants," emphasising the third and last one to be a wicked one. Why? Because he was lazy. Here's what happened.

"Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'

"His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest."

2. Laziness is poor stewardship of what God has given to us

Did you know that you weren't given all those skills and potentials that you have just so that you could build a name for yourself? Ephesians 2:10 tells us, "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."

You were made by God for His plans. He has endowed you with amazing capacities so that you could fulfill His purpose in your generation. Being lazy and procrastinating delays and hinders the fulfilment of our roles in life. Let's not be lazy so that we can do what God has designed us to do.

3. It is sin

Did you know that being lazy is sin? James 4:17 tells us that "it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it."

Lazy people simply put off what they can do, thinking that it can be done at a later time. When we know that it is right for us to do something and decide to put it off for later, it's the same as not doing it when it should be done. It is sin!
