3 Great Tips for Keeping the Pounds Off During the Holidays

Despite Christmas being a happy season when family and friends get together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it can also be a torturous time for dieters because it gets more challenging for them to try and keep off the holiday weight.

With parties left and right, it's hard for people to say no to special home-cooked meals and mouth-watering store-bought treats. But Tanya Zuckerbrot, founder of the F-Factor Diet, told Fox News that there's a way for dieters to still enjoy Christmas parties without scrimping on food.

She said people who are watching their weight should treat themselves to an early fitness present. "If there's a little something you've had your eye on that you think will help you be healthier, now is the time to buy it and put it to use," she said. "The novelty of it will motivate you to use it and help you stay focused when inevitable temptations arise."

Next, Zuckerbrot said people should never go to parties hungry. An hour before any party, Zuckerbrot said people should eat at least five grams each of fibre and protein to curb their hunger. At the same time, it will also slow the body's absorption of sugar. Zuckerbrot suggested turkey slices on high-fibre crackers, an apple with string cheese, or a protein bar.

"Showing up ravenous can lead you to make impulse decisions when you go to fill your plate," she explained.

Lastly, Zuckerbrot said dieters should keep their hands occupied during parties. Instead of holding up a plate and gathering food, people should get camera happy and concentrate on serving others. For women, carrying a clutch or handbag is a good distraction, too.

"Carry a clutch under one arm and a seltzer in the other hand," said Zuckerbrot. "No hands free for another plate of pigs in a blanket."
