A petite woman has given birth to the biggest baby in America this year.

Andrew Jacob Cervantez was born weighing a whopping 15lb 2oz and measured in at 24 inches long. He was delivered via C-section at the Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, California, on Jan. 16, 2014.

His mother, Vanessa Cervantez, is only 5'1" tall but has previously carried other heavy babies. Her other children weighed 10lb 10oz and 9lb 14oz, but that didn't prepare her from the shock that came after learning the size of her newest baby.

The mother told Victor Valley Daily Press: "I couldn't even believe it. They had to double check because I didn't believe them; I thought the machine was broken. None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here."

Doctors were forced to deliver the baby via C-section when they noticed decreased fatal activity during a routine test. Cervantez was 38 weeks pregnant.

Baby Andrew Jacob Cervantez is currently being monitored in the neonatal unit as he is having trouble breathing on his own. Reports state that he had to be flown to the Loma Linda Children's hospital immediately after birth.

Both Vanessa and the baby's father Daniel are reportedly by his side at the children's hospital.

The largest baby born in the United States in 2013 weighed 14 pounds and was born in Utah.

15 pound Andrew Jacob Cervantez may be the biggest baby to be born in California, but according to the Guinness World Records, the largest baby ever to be born in the world was Ann Bates of Canada in 1879. Bates' newborn weighed 23 pounds and 12 ounces.

In February 2012, baby Chun Chun, born in China's Henan Province, set the record for the heaviest baby born in China - weighing in at 15.5 pounds.
