Wayward Pines Season 3 spoilers: Season 3 to conclude the plot? Author Blake Crouch teases 'honest' ending

 Fox Now

With Wayward Pines' Season 2 finale pulling in more than its average viewers but still failing to meet the record of its predecessor, a renewal for a third season remains a possibility but hangs in the balance.

According to a report by TVLine, the finale posted 2.3 million viewers and a 0.7 rating which is pretty close to its 2.4 million viewer average on a weekly basis. Still, this is down by 36 percent from the first season.

Should Fox decide to renew the series, author Blake Crouch, who wrote the trilogy on which the show was based, confirmed that it would most likely be the series finale as they have only planned the show for a three season arc.

The show was originally intended as a 10 episode miniseries that covered the entire trilogy in one season. However, due to positive viewer response and clamor, the network picked it up for a second season and Crouch, together with producer M. Night Shyamalan had to expand the story to cater to more episodes.

"We came up with a three-season arc, so in a perfect world, if we have the chance, we would conclude 'Wayward Pines' in a third season," he said to Zap2It.

"I think we've set up a pretty big premise with the idea of half of Wayward Pines going back into suspension and what awaits them when they step out? What happens to those who were left behind? And what is the state of the Abbies when we find them?" he said.

He however warned that the team will want to stick to the premise of the show and will want an honest ending even if it is not what audiences will want.

In an interview with Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden, she said that the network was still considering the viewers' response on various platforms before deciding the fate of the show.

"We don't know yet what we're going to find when the multi-platform numbers roll up, ultimately how big that audience [can be]," Walden said.
