"Wayward Pines" season 2, while not as praised as the first season, was still a massive success for Fox, and the show is speculated to get renewed soon for a third season. Season 3 is currently rumored to have a strong and compelling story, and it may focus on the future evolution of humans and Abbies.

As stated in a report from TV Line, Fox CEO Dana Walden confirmed back in August that M. Night Shyamalan and Blake Crouch, who wrote the books the series is based on, already had a story in mind, stating they "have a really compelling for Season 3 that I liked very much. We're definitely talking about the show right now."

The show is also possibly getting renewed, following the recent success Shyamalan has enjoyed with the early screenings of his newest film, "Split," which stars "X-Men: Apocalypse" co-lead James McAvoy.

With regards to what the story of season 3 might be, fans speculate that the season 2 finale has already given a hint at the direction which the plot will follow.

Season 2 ended with the survivors of Wayward Pines once again locking themselves in their cryo-chambers, hoping that they would wake up thousands of years into a future safer for them to live in. However, the female Abbie that led the charge into the town also held an infant in her arms, indicating they would continue to prosper and grow in numbers.

Because of this, iTech Post notes it is widely speculated that season 3 will see intelligent Abbies that have evolved and that they are even more powerful and terrifying than ever before. The focus then would be about the human survivors trying to reclaim Wayward Pines from the Abbies that may have already built their own society in what was once a human town.

Fox has yet to officially renew "Wayward Pines" for season 3.
