"Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is still in development, and the studios have yet to announce when it will premiere. However, speculations have been circulating which suggest that the anime series may return this Winter and that it will see lead character Ken Kaneki taking on a new identity.

According to a report from Otakukart, it is rumored that season 3 is being handled by MadHouse Productions instead of Studio Pierrot, and this may allow the season to closely follow the original manga. Seasons 1 and 2 are noted for not being quite faithful to the source material, and this may change in season 3.

The report also states that the focus of the anime may shift from Ken Kaneki to Touka Kirishima, who is now focusing on attaining her college degree. One of the reasons why she will be the new main character is not only to conclude her story arc but because Kaneki is suffering from memory loss.

In the original manga, Kaneki lost his memories and was eventually taken in to become a Ghoul Investigator. During this period he took on the name Haise Sasaki, but over the course of the story arc, he slowly regained his memories of the past. It is unclear if the anime will adapt this as well or if it will prolong the period where he has amnesia.

Should he regain his identity as Kaneki, the report speculates that the season may end with a climactic battle between Kaneki and his mentor, Arima. The anime is also stated to go all-out with regards to violence and that it may not censor the gore that the original manga became famous for.

However, MadHouse Productions have not officially confirmed if they are indeed taking over for season 3, and neither MadHouse nor Studio Pierrot has announced a Winter premiere date. As such, the information should still be taken as pure speculation until proven otherwise.
