'Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers: Damon gets over Elena with a little help from Bonnie

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will try to cope up with the loss of Elena (Nina Dobrev) with Bonnie's (Kat Graham) help in the upcoming season of CW's "The Vampire Diaries."

Pop Sugar reports that the sexy Salvatore vampire will try to get over Elena's absence by drowning his loneliness with alcohol. Bonnie will reportedly be as lost as him, after what happened to her best friend back in season 6. The two are in Europe with Alaric (Matthew Davis), where they spend much of their time binge drinking.

Last season, Kai (Chris Wood) put a sleeping spell on Elena, linking her life with Bonnie's. As long as Bonnie's alive, Elena would remain asleep. Before she went under her long slumber, however, she told her friend to live their lives without regret, especially Bonnie and Damon.

Somerhalder told the website that it will take some time for his character "to figure out who he is supposed to be without Elena." He even teased that there will be a lot of drinking in the new installment, and that Damon "is a lushy, smarmy drunk." Will he be involved with someone else with Elena out of the picture?

Executive producer Julie Plec hinted that it is entirely probable that Damon could get intimate with a different woman. Although he is committed to Elena, it seems impossible that he will remain chaste for 60 years while she remains asleep.

"Damon wasn't necessarily celibate the entire time he waited for Katherine," Plec said.

With the amount of time Damon and Bonnie will be spending together, it is likely that something may blossom between them. Somerhalder said that there are "some deep bonds of friendship" between the two, especially now that they are sharing the same sentiments about Elena.

Will this "friendship" between Damon and Bonnie lead to something deeper? Fans will find out when the series returns on Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. EST on the CW.
