'The Flash' season 2: Reverse-Flash's return explained

Reverse-Flash The CW

Reverse-Flash, played by both Tom Cavanagh and Matt Letscher, was the pivotal villain in "The Flash" season 1 but evidently met his end at the season finale. However, a special feature from Entertainment Weekly not only confirms he will return in the latter half of season 2 but also explains how the character makes a return.

It was widely assumed by fans that the Reverse-Flash coming in season 2 would be from Earth-2 given that the Earth-1 Reverse-Flash could no longer exist due to the circumstances of the season 1 finale. However, the report reveals that this is not the case and that the season 2 Reverse-Flash is indeed the same one from season 1.

"Sometimes you've seen events from one direction and then you start to see them from the other," explained showrunner Andrew Kreisberg. "This Reverse-Flash is not exactly the Reverse-Flash that we saw disintegrate at the end of the year. It's a Reverse-Flash from an earlier timeline. It's not the Earth-Two Reverse-Flash, it's the Reverse-Flash. That is, hands down, one of our best episodes."

According to Screen Rant, Reverse-Flash will be making his return in season 2 episode 11, titled "The Reverse-Flash Returns." This comes after the midseason premiere, titled "Potential Energy," which is expected to be the episode where Barry Allen aka the Flash (Grant Gustin) tells Patty (Shantel VanSanten) about his powers.

The official synopsis for the episode also reveals that this Reverse-Flash will not be played by Tom Cavanagh and instead will use actor Matt Letscher, indicating that he will be playing Eobard Thawne in his true form and not in his disguise as Dr. Harrison Wells.

It is widely speculated that this episode will begin to form the long-lasting feud between The Flash and Reverse-Flash, a feud which will last long into the future and will eventually cause Reverse-Flash to travel back into the past and become the catalyst of events in the entire series.

The midseason premiere of "The Flash" season 2 is this Jan. 19 with the return of Reverse-Flash coming on Jan. 26.
