Samsung Tab S2 release date, specs: company applies for patent on 'Tab S Pro'

Although news about Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 has been scarce in the past few months, it was recently discovered that the South Korean multinational electronics company had patented the name "Tab S Pro." The patent shows the serial number and the date reflects July 3, 2015.

It has been a year since the release of the latest Galaxy Tab S device, and most anticipate Samsung to release a new generation version in the near future. Rumors that the Galaxy Tab S2 was to be unveiled at one of the big electronics events last June was proven wrong.

Other rumors that have surfaced mostly revolve around the awaited tablet comoputer's hardware specifications. Several retailers and electronic gadget review portals have reported that the Tab S2 would sport at least 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

A twitter post from @Onleaks reveals that the Galaxy Tab S2 will be very slim, only be 5.9mm at the thickest point. A much earlier article on sammobile.com reveals that the tablet will have an eight-inch and a 9.7-inch version. Many have commented on how close the sizes are to that of the iPad Air 2. The projected $400 price tag also reaffirms that it is Samsung's bid against Apple's best-selling tablet.

The 8-inch model was reported to be 198.2mm ×134.5mm × 5.4 mm and the 9.7-inch model, 237.1mm × 168.8mm × 5.4mm. Both models will have similar designs to that of the Galaxy S6 and hence, a metal case or glass backplate should be expected.

The devices will come with a SUPER AMOLED display and will reportedly be capable of resolutions of up to 2048x1536 while maintaining a 4:3 aspect ratio. Individually, each eight-inch Galaxy Tab S2 will weigh only 260 grams while the 9.7-inch model will weigh 407 grams.

Although most of the aforementioned speculations regarding Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2 seem legitimate, the telecommunications giant is yet to confirm any of it. What is certain, however is that Samsung has recently filed a patent for the device name "Tab S Pro". On the patent application, Samsung Electronics Co, LTD is reflected as the applicant through its agent, Dong Won Patent and Law Firm. The application was filed last July 3, 2015.

The patent application information was published through an article on Galaxyclub.nl, which is a privately owned Dutch blog dedicated to the Galaxy tablet line. The write-up also mentioned noted the "Galaxy TAB S Pro" name surfaced months before the patent application was filed. It was included in the changelog of Samsung's music app, Milk. "Galaxy Tab S Pro" is rumored for release together with the Galaxy Tab S2.

The Galaxy Tab is a line of upper mid-range Android-based tablet computers produced similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note series but without the Samsung SPen.
