Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 release date: Nvidia announces 3GB edition for $199

Aside from the original GeForce GTX 1060, Nvidia has already released a version with 3GB of VRAM. NVIDIA

Nvidia is now going head to head with its fiercest competitor AMD, as it breaches the $200 GPU price break with a new addition to the GTX 10 series.

The graphics company has just announced a new addition to its recent graphics cards series. The new GTX 1060 now has a 3GB edition, and most observers note that its listed $199 price tag matches it directly with AMD's new RX 480 card. AMD has long been known to provide a much budget-friendly GPU than Nvidia. However, with the new GPU already out in the market, most observers agree that Nvidia has the advantage to date, since the RX 480 remains out of stock at some retailers.

Meanwhile, since Nvidia has cut back on some specs on the original 6GB option GTX 1060, most fans expect that the $200 GeForce GPU will also have lower performance levels. However, Nvidia is reported to have compensated for the cutback. According to PC World, although the VRAM has been cut in half, there is no significant decrease in the new 3GB version's performance, since it will only be about 5 percent slower than the original 6GB variant.

In addition, although the cutback also included a lowered CUDA levels (down to 1152 from the original 1280), the rest of the specs remain the same. Both versions of the GTX 1060 family still offer base speeds of 1506 MHz, with overclock capacity up to 1708 MHz, and memory speed of 8 Gbps. The power of the new 3GB version is also the same 120W as the original GTX 1060 card.

Meanwhile, although Nvidia has just recently unveiled the new GTX 1060 3GB edition, third-party cards makers are already coming out with their own lineups. PNY has already released their own version, while other tech manufacturers like MSI are also expected to come out with new lineups soon.
