Norwegian teenagers set up singing and dancing group at YMCA

Ten Norwegian teenagers will be visiting Sandwell to help set up a new singing and dancing group at the YMCA in West Bromwich.

‘Ten Sing’ (which means Teenagers Sing) is an international YMCA youth programme that uses singing, drama and dance to allow young people to come together to have fun make friends and develop the skills in the arts.

Local charity West Bromwich & District YMCA has secured funding through Sandwell MBCs “Positive Activities for Young People” programme and will be running the sessions every week from their centre in Carters Green.

As part of their recruitment drive to get young people interested in taking part, they have arranged for a visit to Sandwell by 10 young Norwegians who have been involved in Tensing for a number of years.

Staying in Sandwell from 11 to 15 November, they will be visiting a number of local schools in the area, showcasing their talents, and encouraging young people over the age of 11 to join in.

The youngsters from Norway will be leading free workshops at the YMCA on 14 November from 9.30am. Young people who are interested in taking part on Saturday can call the YMCA for more details, or can be registered by their parents on the day.

The event will culminate in all the participants performing a concert at the YMCA from 5.30pm to show off what they have learnt.

Steve Clay, Chief Executive of the West Bromwich YMCA said: “We are delighted to be welcoming our visitors from Norway, and are really grateful for the enthusiasm and excitement they will bring to the area.

"This visit shows the strength of the YMCA movement with those involved, whether staff, resident or young person being given fantastic opportunities to travel and get involved in different events.

“I’m really pleased that we can offer young people in Sandwell the opportunity to join Ten Sing at no cost. As a local charity committed to helping young people belong, contribute and thrive we would love more young people to become involved in what we’re doing.”

Laura Perry, Youth Participation Worker at the YMCA said: “This is a great opportunity for young people who like to sing and dance to get involved. You don’t need to be good at it, just come along with a desire to learn, and you are sure to make some really great friends.

“We will also be looking to help young people take responsibility and grow in confidence, as well as singing or dancing ability. If you can’t make it to the event this Saturday, then please contact us anyway to find out about our weekly free sessions.”
