'House of Cards' season 4 release date, spoilers, cast news: Neve Campbell joins as series regular

House of Cards Season 4 Netflix

Neve Campbell is making a big return to television in season 4 of "House of Cards." According to Deadline, the 41-year-old actress is set to join the Netflix drama as a regular cast member, and while details remain unclear as to what role the "Party of Five" alum will be taking on, it is believed that she will be playing a character to rival Robin Wright's Claire Underwood.

The role will be one of Campbell's most high profile roles in recent years. Aside from the hit '90s show, the actress was also the lead in the "Scream" movie franchise.

It seems like Campbell's character — rumored to be part of a younger power couple who will go against the Underwoods — is just one of the problems that Claire and Frank are about to face in the new season. But aside from having new political rivals, the couple will also have to deal with their marital problems. Claire walking out on Frank during the season 3 finale will impact the upcoming season, and it's expected that their marriage will still be on the rocks.

Show creator Beau Willimon told The Hollywood Reporter that he and his team of writers were "scared" once they began to go into the story of Claire leaving Frank.

"A lot of the strength of the show is based on the strength of that marriage. But as soon as we began to explore that, we realized there was no turning back," he told THR.

The show creator revealed that the team realized that they have laid the groundwork in the previous two seasons for the conflict between the Underwoods before fully exploring it at the end of season 3.

But given Claire and Frank's ambition and lust for power, is it possible that the two will put on a united front now that a new power couple will be coming to Washington D.C.? It's possible that the competition could force the two to work together, as they have always been at their best when they work as one against a common enemy.

The fourth season of "House of Cards" is slated to premier on Netflix in 2016.
