'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' release date, cast news: Mark Hamill wants in, James Gunn open to potential team-up

Mark Hamill may be crossing from one Disney property to another soon. The actor, best known as Luke Skywalker in Lucasfilm's "Star Wars" franchise, has just voiced interest in joining "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" and director James Gunn is open to meet him for discussion.

Talks of the potential team-up started when a fan reached out to Gunn, asking if he could bring the "Star Wars" icon on board the threequel. The director responded he would be happy to talk about it and that was when Hamill himself joined the conversation.

"I would be happy to do so, both as a good neighbor & an unemployed actor. All the best, mh," he chimed in, to which Gunn happily responded "Haha. Let's do it." They went on for a few more exchanges about how DMs (direct messages) work on the platform.

Everybody, even celebrities like Josh Gad, was in a mix of joy and disbelief upon reading their conversation. However, whether or not it leads to actual serious discussions on Hamill's potential "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" appearance is up in the air. Thus, fans should not get their hopes up yet.

As Screen Rant noted, Gunn may have had the story worked out already and it may not have a part that does not suit the man popularly known on the big screen as a Jedi master. Then again, the movie is not set for release until 2020, so there is still a chance Gunn would be able to find a part for Hamill. Since he was also able to give Sylvester Stallone a role in Vol. 2, there is a reason to hope he can make room for Hamill in the next film as well.

As usual, fans can only keep their fingers crossed for now. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" has no exact release date at the moment, but it is rumored to filming in Atlanta early next year.
