'Far Cry 5' features news: New Map Editor allows custom maps & missions

One of the many crazy things players can do with the "Far Cry Arcade" feature for "Far Cry 5" Ubisoft

"Far Cry 5" has not yet been released but it seems the developers know that players can never have enough "Far Cries," as they have announced a complex new Map Editor feature to keep the players occupied long after they have finished the main game.

Ubisoft, developer and publisher of the upcoming "Far Cry 5" has just revealed that the game's upcoming feature "Far Cry Arcade" will be making use of and expanding the "Far Cry 5" Map Editor in ways that would give players a lot of freedom in creating their own unique maps and adventures. It should be noted that "Far Cry Arcade" is actually "Far Cry 5's" Map Editor, and not a separate feature.

It was simply thus named since it will now allow players to create their own solo, cooperative (co-op) or player-versus-player (PvP) levels. Back then, earlier "Far Cry" titles with their own map editor features only allowed for multiplayer maps that can be quite limiting given how the "Far Cry" franchise has always been about sandbox freedom. This makes "Far Cry Arcade" the biggest and most versatile map creation tool in the history of the franchise, allowing players to customize and possibly share their own authored adventures with others.

Simply put, "Far Cry Arcade" will allow players to use the assets of the game (i.e., character models, flora and fauna, environments) in whatever creative map combination they see fit. They will also be able to use the game engine's artificial intelligence (AI) script and programming in order to trigger certain events or create their own missions or objectives.

The developers also want "Far Cry Arcade" to be as accessible as the game's campaign, which is why the Map Editor access is tied to the players' progression into the main campaign of the first-person shooter (FPS). Players will also be able to view the work of others and how they made their own custom maps through the powerful map editor, though these user-created levels will be curated by the developers first.

All this will be available once "Far Cry 5" gets released on March 27 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Microsoft Windows.
