It has been over six months since the last episode of the ninth season of "Doctor Who" was aired on our television screens, and the foremost question in the minds of the hit British science-fiction show is: "When will the next season air?"

Executives behind the show recently announced that avid viewers of "Doctor Who" will have to will have to wait until 2017 to see the tenth season of the show--skipping the practice of launching fresh episodes of the TV series on a yearly basis.

In a report published by BBC, Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, however assured "Doctor Who" fans that the tenth season will be "worth the wait." She also announced that this will be Steven Moffatt's last season as executive producer.

Moore explained that the showrunners decided not to air "Doctor Who" Season 10 this year because of the big events already lined up for 2016, including the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"I have decided to schedule Steven's big finale series in Spring 2017 to bring the nation together for what will be a huge event on the channel," Moore said, referring to Moffatts, who has been helming the show since the fifth season in 2010.

"2016 is spoilt with national moments including the Euros and Olympics and I want to hold something big back for 2017 - I promise it will be worth the wait! I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Chris Chibnall, a wonderfully talented writer who I know will bring something very special to the hit series," the BBC One official added.

According to a report from Cinema Blend, another reason why "Doctor Who" Season 10 will not air this year is the fact that Moffatt also has commitments to another show, "Sherlock."

The good news for eager fans of "Doctor Who" is that the tenth season, which will have 12 episodes, will be preceded by a Christmas special this year.
