The buddy cop franchise "Bad Boys" is a very popular film series, but it has not gotten any installment since the 2003 sequel movie. That may soon change, as the franchise is getting a spin-off television series starring the character that Gabrielle Union portrayed in the second film.

The project, which has yet to be given a title, is being pitched to different TV networks, and has already gotten considerable interest. The new series is from Jerry Bruckheimer, who also produced the "Bad Boys" movies.

Union will once again play Special Agent Sydney "Syd" Burnett. She is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett, played by Martin Lawrence. When she appeared in "Bad Boys II," she was romantically involved with Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey, played by Will Smith, who was the partner of Marcus.

The actress is currently working on the series "Being Mary Jane." However, that series is set to conclude its four-season run for good next year with a two-hour finale.

Union is an experienced actress on both the film and television front. She has recently appeared in movies like "Almost Christmas," "Sleepless," and "The Birth of a Nation."

In terms of television exposure, she has been part of "City of Angels," "Night Stalker," and "Flashforward."

Doug Belgrad will also produce the new "Bad Boys" series via 2.0 Entertainment. Belgrad worked on the original "Bad Boys" film during his career with Sony as its movie executive. Sony Pictures, who is responsible for the film series, will also be involved in the project.

"The Blacklist" writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier will be the ones who will write the series. It is not yet known if the films' director, Michael Bay, will be involved in the television spin-off.

If this new series becomes successful, it may usher in new opportunities to finally develop and complete a third installment in the film series.
