LONDON - A 14-year-old girl is critical in hospital after suffering multiple stab wounds in a frenzied knife attack in a Lancashire park, police said on Tuesday.
"This is a particularly nasty assault on a defenceless young girl," said Detective Superintendent Steve Brunskill.
"At this early stage of the investigation we are unsure of the motive and would urge people in the area to take precautions for their own safety until this dangerous offender, or offenders, are caught."
The attack took place at around 5 p.m. on Monday in Astley Park, Chorley, south of Preston.
The teenager was thought to have gone to the park, a popular hangout for young people, after visiting shops in Astley Village.
She was found by a passer-by who alerted the emergency services and after being given first aid at the scene, was rushed to hospital where she underwent surgery. Her condition was described as critical.
Detectives said they were waiting to speak to the girl's family to try and piece together what had happened.
In the meantime, extra officers, included mounted police, have been put on patrol in the area to reassure locals.
