Android 6.0 Marshmallow release date for Sony Xperia Z5, Z4, C5 lines and more

Sony Mobile has confirmed that some of its smartphones will receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update.

After Google rolled out the latest Android operating system their Nexus devices earlier this week, the Japanese mobile phone manufacturer followed up with their own announcement regarding their mobile operating system upgrade plans.

The announcement also came after Motorola announced its Android 6.0 Marshmallow rollout schedule for the third-gen Moto X Pure Edition, Moto X Style, Moto X Play, and Moto G, as well as second-gen Moto X Pure Edition US-edition, Moto X, and Moto G, Droid Turbo, Moto Maxx, and Moto Turbo.

"We've been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our devices as possible, as quickly as we can," Sony stated on its official blog. "We're really excited about the new Sony features and functionality and the improvements we've made to the user experience – and we'll be sharing more soon."

For this particular update, Sony will roll out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to their Sony Xperia devices including those that were released from as far back as 2012.

The list includes:

  • Sony Xperia Z5
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z3+
  • Sony Xperia Z3
  • Sony Xperia Z3
  • Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z2
  • Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia M5
  • Sony Xperia C5
  • Sony Ultra Xperia M4 Aqua
  • Sony Xperia C4

The rollout will begin to over the next two weeks for all Sony Mobile users in Europe, particularly in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ireland, Germany and the UK.

The new Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will bring new software features for the Sony Mobile products, which includes:

  • Longer battery life by offering a sleep state
  • Customizable app permissions for each new app installed
  • Fingerprint support for more secure Android Pay and Play Store transactions
  • USB Type-C connectors
