Donald Trump came out triumphant on Tuesday night's New York primary, and it was a landslide victory for the Republican presidential nominee. This is a significant win for the Manhattan-based real estate tycoon and a step forward for the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.
Votes are still being counted, but majority of the votes have put Trump on the lead with his other rivals, Ted Cruz and John Kasich, on his home state. BBC reported that 98 percent of the votes have been counted and Trump is on the lead with over 60 percent of the votes.
Trump said, at the Trump Tower in Manhattan, "I have to say to the people that know me the best - the people of New York - when they give us this kind of a vote it's just incredible."
If the real-estate tycoon makes a clean sweep of all 95 Republican delegates in New York, this will lessen the chance of a contested nomination at the Republican party convention that is set to happen in July.
On Tuesday morning, the first thing Trump did was cast his vote, for himself. His polling station is at the Central Synagogue, located three blocks from Trump Tower.
After casting his vote, he then told the reporters, "It's a proud moment. It's a great moment. And who would've thought? It's just an honor."
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton was called victorious even before the polls closed. At 98.4 percent of the votes tallied, Clinton, the former New York senator, is enjoying a 57.9 percent lead against Bernie Sanders, who has 42.1 percent share, The Gaurdian reported.
Trump needs to win a total of 1,237 delegates in order to be declared as the Republican candidate. Cruz has a total of 559 delegates, while Kasich has 147.
For the Democrats, 2,383 delegate votes are needed to clinch the candidacy. Clinton is currently at 1,893, while Sanders is at 1,180.
The next primaries will be in Pennsylvania on April 26 and will be followed by Indiana on May 3.
