Rumors of Illuminati lit up social media amid controversial performances by Madonna and AC/DC at the 2015 Grammys Awards making #Illuminati among the trending topics in the United States.

As rock band AC/DC took the stage to perform their hit song Highway to Hell, posts about devil worship and Illuminati conspiracies flooded the social networking site Twitter.

More posts continued as the coverage panned to the crowd, where hundreds were seen wearing devil horn headbands.

Twitter user Mark Dice posted a photo of the performance and the audience, saying: "Thousands are literally wearing Devil horns in the audience at the Grammys #Illuminati"

"Illuminati is in full swing at the Grammys tonight. Highway to Hell with everyone in horns!!!! They're not even trying to hide it now," Mac mal da Great echoed.

Even more comments followed Madonna's performance of her latest single Living for Love, where she dressed up as a matador surrounded by dancers wearing horns.

"Madonna and Kanye performing together? You know this is about to be an illuminati performance.lol #GRAMMYs," Twitter user Lil Rus said.

This was not the first time the pop icon was linked to the Illuminati as her Super Bowl performance in 2012, where she dressed as an Egyptian goddess, was riddled with symbolism linked to the group.

The Illuminati is believed to be a secret society aimed at stopping superstition, obscurantism, and religious influence over public life and abuses of state power. However, theories have abounded over the years that identify the group as secret devil worshippers trying to create a New World Order.

Celebrities and well known personalities have been linked to the Illuminati, often those who have been seen wearing or using symbols like the All Seeing Eye, Pyramids, the Owl, eternal flame, the pentagram, the number 666, the skull, and snakes.

Lady Gaga, who is known for her flamboyant style and controversial music videos, was also not spared from conspiracy theories with one Twitter user connecting her 6 Grammys, 6th album release and 6th year in the music industry to devil worship.
