A strong legion of volunteers is needed to help those affected by the heavy rains already flooding large parts of Texas, Christian Headlines reported on Wednesday.

Promiseland Church is joining forces with Samaritan's Purse in a huge relief effort for the affected residents of the city of San Marcos. Hundreds of volunteers from across the country have been helping residents with the clean-up every day, staying for the meantime in the church's building.

"If we have a strong volunteer response we can wrap things up sooner, but if we have a weak volunteer response it could go into July," said Tim Haas, manager of US disaster relief for Samaritan's Purse.

Volunteers have been helping residents with flood recovery, removing everything that is wet or damaged. Over 800 houses in Houston and thousands more in Central Texas have already been damaged by the devastating flood.

Haas said the volunteers' work involves mostly lifting waterlogged carpet and flooring and getting them out to the curb to allow the house to dry out.

The record-breaking rains severely affected many communities, whose residents have been asked by officials throughout the Harris County to evacuate.

"I wish I could describe Texas rain to you," Hannah Lechmann, a Houston native said. "Our raindrops are huge. And in places where the soil is harder, the ground just doesn't know how to hold water."

The San Jacinto River has already breached the flood stage by three feet, reaching 52 feet, said Kim Jackson from the Harris County Flood Control District.

"We're advising residents to take any measures that they deem appropriate for their safety as the river continues to rise," said Jackson.
