Archbishop hits out at City 'bank robbers'

City traders who made millions of pounds in profit by cashing in on the falling share prices of leading banks are "bank robbers" and "asset strippers", the Archbishop of York has said.

In an address to the Worshipful Company of International Bankers' annual dinner on Wednesday, Dr John Sentamu said that the financial world appeared to be governed by "Alice in Wonderland" rules.

"The share value of a bank is no longer dependent on the strength of its performance, but rather on the willingness of the Government to bail it out," he said.

Dr Sentamu hit out in particular at a practice known as short-selling, in which traders deliberately undersell shares of troubled banks and financial institutions, gambling that a further fall in prices will enable them to make profit by buying the shares back at a cheaper price.

His criticism follows the collapse of US bank Lehman Brothers and the announcement of Lloyds TSB's £12.2bn takeover of HBOS.

"To a bystander like me, those who made £190m deliberately underselling the shares of HBOS, in spite of a very strong capital base, and drove it into the arms of Lloyds TSB, are clearly bank robbers and asset strippers," said Dr Sentamu.

"We find ourselves in a market system which seems to have taken its rules of trade from Alice in Wonderland," he said.

Dr Sentamu went on to criticise the way in which huge sums of money were being put forward to bail out troubled banks whilst governments remain reluctant to come up with the funding necessary to eradicate poverty.

"One of the ironies about this financial crisis is that it makes action on poverty look utterly achievable. It would cost $5bn to save six million children's lives," he said.

"World leaders could find 140 times that amount for the banking system in a week. How can they tell us that action for the poorest is too expensive?"

World leaders will meet on Thursday in New York for a special UN session on poverty in which UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will attempt to revitalise financial commitment to the Millennium Development Goals to halve global poverty by 2015.

At last, the Church of England speaks out on an issue that affects us all, at one level or another. It remains to be seen if the CofE will DO anything.

Claire of Bournemouth - with all the low-level sub issues that plagued the CofE - homosexuality issues, women priests, women bishops, pew-selling and Kairos, all important in and of themselves - don't you think that the Church's leaders need to stand up and address these world-shaking issues, ESPECIALLY as they have a scriptual and prophetic back story to them? Addressing poverty issues in Africa, India, et al, are also important, but so it is in the UK.

God is to shake His Church, not necessarity any given denomination, in the near future, as well as the world in general, and it is all there in Scripture, if one cares to look.

God deals with real-world issues, and so should we, and criticise only when our spiritual leaders take on 'safe', as far as they are concerned, issues. Otherwise, we present a poor image of Christian unity to the world, and become a pitiable organisation, at best, or a laughing stock, at worst.

In what sort of warped worldview does the opinion of an ARCHBISHOP have any bearing on financial and economic issues?
