'Wonder Woman' movie news: New image showcasing Amazonian warriors released

Melanippe, Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyta and General Antiope in Wonder Woman Warner Bros. Pictures

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) may have made her big screen debut in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" but her role was only meant to introduce her to the audiences. The solo film "Wonder Woman" will really delve into her origin, and director Patty Jenkins has revealed a new image of the Amazonian princess as well as a few important details regarding the film.

The new image, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, showcases Gal Gadot as Princess Diana aka Wonder Woman, and standing with her is her mother, Queen Hippolyta, played by "Gladiator" star Connie Nielsen. Diana's aunts, General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Lieutenant Melanippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli), are also standing on each side.

According to Jenkins, Princess Diana is being raised by her mother and aunts simultaneously. Jenkins continued to expound on the fact that each adult influences Diana in a different way, teaching her different concepts and even contradicting morals in regards to the outside world.

Jenkins states that Queen Hippolyta wants to shield Diana from the world of men while Antiope wants to train her in preparation for the outside world.

"She is the only child they raised together," the director explained. "And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them."

The new image also reveals that Diana won't be wearing the iconic Wonder Woman outfit throughout the film. Several leaked photos showcase her in what appears to be a World War I setting and she is wearing civilian clothing. This is the same in "Batman v Superman." Her outfit her resembles that of an Ancient Greek warrior with creative touches added.

Jenkins also expounded on the costume's design, confirming that the designs were chosen in order to balance a good, cinematic look that is reminscent of the comic books while maintaining practicality for battle. This also extends to the high heels, which, the director explained, also have their practical use and are not just there for looks.

"Wonder Woman" will open in theaters June 23, 2017.
