Although "Wayward Pines" season 2 saw a decline in viewership ratings compared to the first installment, there might still be hope for the series to be renewed for a third season.
Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden confirmed in a report from TV Line that producer M. Night Shyamalan and novelist Blake Crouch have an interesting concept for season 3 and that the series has a big chance of moving forward. Walden stated that the show is still rated as the number one scripted series of the year, and they are still waiting for the numbers from delayed viewings, ratings from people who watch using DVRs or who used streaming services, before getting a final verdict on whether the show underperformed or did just well enough to get renewed.
She did confirm that the second season struggled early on since it had to reboot the story, given the circumstances of the season 1 finale. However, she did explain that the show hit its pace and stride by the third episode, and as such, still managed to find success.
Regarding season 3's story, it is hinted that when the humans wake up again after spending hundreds of years in their pods, they will be facing a brand new evolution of Abbies. This was hinted in the season 2 finale when the female Abbie was spotted carrying what appeared to be a human infant or, at least, an infant Abbie.
Back in July, novelist Blake Crouch also hinted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that season 3 would involve further evolutions of the Abbies. Given that evolution does not go backwards, these new Abbies would have developed more human-like features, and they may be even more dangerous than the ones from the first two installments.
"'Wayward Pines' is very focused on the idea of human evolution and humans evolved into Abbies, but that does not have to be a static thing. It's continuing, even in the course of our show. Evolution has always pushed forward, and the scene suggests that the Abbies are changing also. The Abbies will evolve into something else," he explained.
