'Wayward Pines' season 2 spoilers: plot takes characters outside the walls of Wayward Pines

 FOX

"Wayward Pines" season 2 is set to premiere this May 25. The series will continue where the first season left off, with Ben Burke (Charlie Tahan) waking up to discover the town has been taken over by the First Generation. In preparation for the second season's premiere the studios have released the first teaser trailer.

The trailer opens with a stage presentation where a young child sings about Wayward Pines. Interweaved with the singing are a few clips of the new main character, Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric) who appears to be experimenting on one of the abbies, the creatures that humans had evolved into over the centuries.

According to a report from Ecumenical News it is even possible that Theo may have discovered what caused the abbies to transform and evolve the way they have. However, early reviews for the premiere indicate that despite the evidence Theo is still not convinced they are living in a post-apocalyptic future.

There are also two clips in the trailer that hint the second season will spend more time outside the walls of Wayward Pines. There is a short clip of several people using flamethrowers to kill several abbies and there is a separate sequence showing Ben Burke out in a field where he encounters several abbies that may have sensed his presence.

It is undetermined how much time the season will focus on Ben and Theo leading a rebellion to topple the new government set by the First Generation and how much time will be spent exploring the world outside, as the original books and season 1 hinted that the entire world has collapsed but there may still be survivors somewhere.

Kate (Carla Gugino) is also shown in the trailer but her presence may have been reduced to a recurring role in season 2 as she is showcased in a hospital bed and is handcuffed to make sure she doesn't escape. It is speculated she may have tried leading a rebellion but failed.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 premieres this May 25.
