'True Detective' season 3 release date news: Show cancelled as series creator develops new show?

 HBO

"True Detective" season 3 may be cancelled as the Hollywood Reporter reveals that Nic Pizzolatto may be working on a brand-new HBO series instead. This follows the news that HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has been replaced by comedy-chief and 12-year HBO veteran Casey Bloys.

According to the report, Bloys and Pizzolatto may officially cancel "True Detective" given that the second season saw a significant drop in terms of quality and viewership ratings when compared to season 1, which many critics and audiences praised as one of the best shows on the network other than "Game of Thrones."

However, a report from the IBTimes point out that HBO did sign Pizzolatto to write a series back in November 2015. It is possible that Pizzolatto will focus on a brand-new series for HBO while a separate team of writers will continue working on "True Detective" season 3, now with a different team working behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, neither Bloys nor Pizzolatto has made an official announcement regarding the fate of "True Detective" season 3. This means it is likely that the show may move on just as it is possible that it has been cancelled in favor of a new series from its creator.

The downfall of the series has been attached to its writing, pacing, characters and the events that unfolded in the finale episode. However, as reported by the Wrap back in January, Lombardo himself took the blame as he revealed he rushed Pizzolatto to get season 2 out as quickly as possible while the first season was still garnering a lot of attention and praise.

"Well, you know what? I set him up to deliver, in a very short timeframe, something that became very challenging to deliver," Lombardo explained at the time. "That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore."
