'True Detective' season 2 spoilers: Episode 4 'Down Will Come' focuses on Ray Velcoro's story

Despite the slow start, "True Detective" season 2 is quickly gaining its momentum. The promotional trailer for episode 4 titled "Down Will Come" has been released, and while it gives little information about the investigation, it places Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) front and center.

In the trailer, there is a quick scene of Ray finally getting to share a few moments with his son Chad (Trevor Larcom). He gives his kid a police badge that once belonged to his own father, Eddie Velcoro (Fred Ward). According to a report from CarterMatt, this appears to be Ray's final farewell to his son.

It is hinted in the trailer that Ray will need to go back to the criminal-centric lifestyle in order to progress in his investigation. This is a similar method used by Detective Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) in season 1 when he had to return to the drug-dealing biker gangs in order to get information that the police department couldn't give him.

According to a report from TVFanatic, Ray's views and life may be revealed in more than just expository dialogue and flashbacks as it appears episode 4 will pair Ray with Taylor Kitsch's Paul Woodrugh. The report from CarterMatt states that Paul is struggling with where he is and he may seek unlikely help from Ray this time around.

One thing that the trailer doesn't give away is the progress the three detectives are making regarding the investigation. The death of Ben Caspere in episode 1 launched the investigation and things quickly turned toward the dark and occult, similar to season 1, but nothing in the promotional trailer gives away what new facts or leads the detectives will reach.

"True Detective" season 2 episode 4, "Down Will Come," airs on July 12.
