'Tron 3' cancelled? Tron actor Bruce Boxleitner gives up on franchise

"Tron 3" was picking up steam but before Disney could officially green light the project, they pulled the plug on it. Speculations have put the blame on the financial failure of "Tomorrowland" and the lukewarm reception toward "Tron: Legacy." But if the franchise does get picked up in the future, it appears it will have to move on without Tron himself, Bruce Boxleitner.

Boxleitner portrayed Alan Bradley/ Tron in both the original 1982 "Tron" and its 2010 sequel "Tron Legacy." He also did voice work for the animated series "Tron: Uprising" and the video game "Tron 2.0." However, in a recent interview with /Film, the actor stated that he is no longer interested in coming back, even if they do revive the franchise later on.

"I don't really care anymore," explained Boxleitner. "I'm done with it. I've moved on. I hate to say that but it's been too up and down for me. I would rather not just keep going. I don't want to repeat my career anymore. That'd be like, 'Let's reboot 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King.' No, I'm not interested. Or 'Babylon 5.'"

The actor continued to explain that Disney seems to have lost all interest in the "Tron" series, especially now that they had acquired bigger franchises such as Marvel and "Star Wars."

He also stated that he believes Disney cancelled "Tron 3" not because of the failure of "Tomorrowland" but because of the success of their other franchises, which is where the studio is putting more money and attention into because they know that they work well.

Boxleitner also confirmed that Disney was moving pretty steadily in pre-production for "Tron 3" and also echoed a previous report from The Hollywood Reporter, which stated that both Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund were coming back for the sequel. Unfortunately the film never got past that phase of development.

Disney may still do "Tron 3" after a few years. After all, it took the studios 28 years to do "Tron: Legacy." But whether they do a sequel or eventually decide to reboot the franchise, they may have to do it without Boxleitner's involvement.
