'The Vampire Diaries' season 6: Ian Somerhalder hints Damon's return but Elena will move on

Actor Ian Somerhalder hinted that his popular character Damon Salvatore will return in the sixth season of the CW's "The Vampire Diaries".

The actor uploaded a photo to his Instagram account hinting the return of Damon next season. The photo showed Damon with fangs and blood with the caption "He's back! #DamonSalvatore."

This almost put to bed rumors claiming Damon died in the last season's final episode.

In the last episode of season five of "The Vampire Diaries," fans shed tears during Damon's and Bonnie Bennet's "death scene" when they went to The Other Side. The whereabouts of the two are still unknown.

What happened to Damon and Bonnie will be confirmed when season six airs at 8 p.m. Oct. 2.

However, Elena Gilbert (played by actress Nina Dobrev) will move on from Damon's death in the new season. In a promotional teaser, Elena was deeply saddened by Damon's absence and Stefan (played by Paul Wesley) instructed her to say goodbye to his brother.

Next season, Elena will reportedly work as an intern at the Whitmore Medical Center. Elena will also be a love interest for vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman. It is believed that Elena will first grieve the loss of her lover. The panel at the recent San Diego Comic-Con confirmed that Elena and Stefan will not rekindle their old relationship. Stefan will not be involved in a relationship as he, too, grieves the loss of his brother.
