'The Real Housewives of Atlanta' season 9 update: NeNe Leakes in financial trouble; skips fundraising event

The cast of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" season 9 have launched a new fundraiser to raise awareness and support for the philanthropic efforts of cast member Phaedra Parks. However, as reported by That Grape Juice, the video notably lacks the appearance of NeNe Leakes, who has been confirmed to appear as a guest in season 9.

A short clip of the event was shared by Kandi Burruss on Instagram, showcasing the cast selling off numerous products in order to raise support for Parks. As the camera pans around, it is notable that Leakes is not present despite the fact she is appearing in this season.

Radar Online recently reported that one possible cause is the fact that Leakes and her husband, Gregg, are currently facing charges due to unpaid taxes. The report reveals that together the couple owes over $870,000. NeNe in particular has been charged with a $824,366.01 federal tax lien, filed by the IRS on Aug. 1.

The report continued to explain that the reality TV star had neglected to pay taxes since 2014. Gregg, on the other hand, has yet to pay a $45,752.42 federal tax lien, which was filed as far back as 2012. The report also reveals that by Dec. 6 2012, Gregg had failed to pay taxes since 2004. The courts have proven that he hasn't done much to improve his debt since 2012.

Despite this, it is noted by the report that Leakes may be able to pay off the due taxes as she has been offered $2.5 million to guest star in "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" season 9. It is possible that her current legal trouble is why she may have been too busy to appear at some of the events hosted by the show's cast members.

It is further noted that she will have friends to lean on as the other cast members have also encountered financial problems in the past.

"The Real Housewives of Atlanta" season 9 is speculated to premiere in March or April 2017.
