'The Flash' movie cast news: Kiersey Clemons cast as Iris West

Ezra Miller as the Flash Warner Bros. Pictures

Just following the release of the trailer for "Justice League," Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced that "Dope" and "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" star Kiersey Clemons will be portraying Iris West in the upcoming "Flash" movie.

According to a report from Variety, the actress has been in talks for the role for some time but this is the first official confirmation that she has indeed nabbed the role. She will be acting opposite Ezra Miller, who plays Barry Allen aka the Flash. In the comic books, Iris is Barry's love interest and later his wife.

The casting news reflects the choice of casting Candice Patton as Iris West in the CW television show "The Flash," adding more diversity to the projects. In the original comic books, Iris is depicted as a Caucasian female but in both the television series and the upcoming film she is now African-American.

In most iterations of the story, including the CW series, Iris is related to the chief of the Central City police chief and is also related to Kid Flash, either by being his sister or aunt. It is undetermined what kind of relations she will have with the side characters in the film.

Entertainment Weekly also points out that this will mark a reunion for Clemons and "The Flash" director Rick Famuyiwa, who have worked together in the past.

The report continues to state that Famuyiwa, who stepped into the director's chair after the departure of Seth Grahame-Smith, will still be using the majority of Smith's script. This script in turn is based on a treatment penned by "The LEGO Movie" directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord.

"The Flash" will open in theaters on March 16, 2018.
