Microsoft is now offering its Surface Pro 3 tablet for a cheaper price although the company just released the device early this year.

Aside from offering an entry-level tablet, Microsoft also offers an education discount that allows a student or educator to purchase the Surface Pro 3 for only $649, which is $150 less than the current $799 tablet. The education discount applies to all Surface Pro 3 models. Thus, it means that buyers can knock off $150 from the tag prices.

This is just in time for the back-to-school discounts and the promo is available in some Microsoft brick-and-mortar stores and will end on Sept. 3.

Microsoft recently released a cheaper Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with lesser specs and features, compared to the high end versions of the tablet. The entry-level tablet costs $799, which is $200 cheaper than the first version that the company released last May.

The $799 tablet packs Intel Core i3 processor unlike the $999 version, which boasts the i5 chipset. Aside from a tablet with lower specs, the Redmond-based tech giant also released a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 with Intel Core i7 processor and 256GB for $1,549 as well as a Surface Pro 3 with an Intel Core i7 processor and 512GB that costs $1,949.

The tablets pack a Haswell processor. The 64GB and 128GB models are equipped with 4GB RAM, while the high-end 512GB and 256GB versions are shipping with bigger 8GB. Microsoft is also giving away a free "Surface Pen" (stylus) along with the tablets as well as a battery with a capacity of up to nine hours for web browsing or constant use.

All of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 models pack a 12-inch screen display and Windows 8.1 OS. The tablet is considerably thinner with its thickness measuring only 9.1mm. It is also lighter as it weighs only 800 grams.

The tablet aims to squash Apple's MacBook laptops. Although the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is a tablet, it comes with a keyboard accessory that is sold separately for $130 that transforms it into a laptop. This tablet-laptop hybrid aims to replace laptops.
