The future of the popular "Super Smash Bros." series is cloudy as its director Masahiro Sakurai hinted that the recently released version of the fighting game may not have a sequel or he may no longer be involved in the next one.
Sakurai stated in his interview with Game Informer that he cannot hundred percent say that the game will not get a sequel, but said that he made the latest installment with the thought that there will not be any more follow up. He said that the developers went beyond their limits in making it.
This is in line with the director's previous statement that he has no concrete plans of releasing a DLC for the "Super Smash Bros." for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS since there is nothing to add. Moreover, he does not want players to feel that the developers are cutting the content for profit alone. He has no intention of making an expansion pack although it is a perfect profit and marketing strategy for the game.
However, nothing is set in stone as Sakurai does not have the final say in the series. The team of game developers and publisher may still push a sequel due to the immense success of "Smash Bros. 4." Moreover, it is natural that key designers leave the projects they helped to set up and welcome new directors to take the helm. This will give the game a new perspective that will lead to a new direction.
The development of the latest "Super Smash Bros." caused injury to Sakurai's arm due to the physical effort he invested in completing the game. He also remarked that developing the game caused stress and affected his personal and social life.
Meanwhile, Nintendo offered no comment about Sakurai's statement as it is still early to confirm whether it will release a follow up to "Super Smash Bros. 4" since the game is fairly new.
