'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' spoilers: New footage shows Finn wielding a lightsaber

Star Wars: The Force Awakens LucasFilm

The latest promotional video for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was uploaded via Instagram and it reveals a spoiler regarding John Boyega's character, Finn. In the footage, Finn is seen standing in a snowy landscape wielding a blue lightsaber as he faces Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

The portion showing Kylo Ren brandishing his red cross-guard lightsaber was first seen in the teaser trailer released last year. This new footage finally shows who he is fighting. Previous trailers revealed Finn as a Stormtrooper who might have gone rogue and joined the Resistance but this is the first official revelation of Finn using a lightsaber.

Being able to wield a lightsaber does not necessarily require a person to be a Jedi, as seen in the prequel trilogy where General Grievous was able to fight using numerous lightsabers all at once, but it does hint that Finn may be Force-sensitive.

According to a report from The Guardian, there are speculations that the lightsaber Finn is using is the same lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. This lightsaber was then passed down to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in "A New Hope" but was lost during a fight with Vader in "The Empire Strikes Back."

The report also cites that this may indicate that Finn will be the new main protagonist in the sequel trilogy, alongside Daisy Ridley's Rey, while Luke Skywalker, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) will only serve as important side characters.

The lightsaber won't be the only connection to Darth Vader. As revealed in an interview with Empire, director J.J. Abrams explained that Kylo is member of the "Knights of Ren" who are Dark Force users obsessed with the legacy of Darth Vader. There are also speculations that Kylo may be the son of Harrison Ford's Han Solo.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters on Dec. 18.
